Battle of Salamis

Crucial naval battle during the Persian invasion of Greece in 480 in the Persian Wars. Desperate after the sacking of Athens (whose men and ships made up the majority of the Greek navy), the Greeks succeeded in luring the Persian fleet into a channel between the island of Salamis and the mainland, and inflicting heavy casualties. Their victory prevented Persian forces from invading the Peloponnese and completing the conquest of Greece.
