Authoritative institutions descended from the original Research centre of the colony's founding, providing training in a number of scientific and social disciplines. They also function as Courts of Appeal in matters relating to the Great Law, refuges for travelers, and other functions similar to monasteries in Earth's European continent in the mediaeval era. Chancels are governed by a Council of Regents headed by the Canon of the Chancel.
