Chongqing has a rich history. The Consulate Generals of the UK, France, Japan, the United States, and Germany opened in Chongqing between 1890 and 1904. In 1891, Chongqing became the first inland commerce port open to foreigners. The city became a municipality of the Republic of China in 1929. The municipality was demoted to a sub-provincial city in 1954. It regained municipality status in 1997.

The official Xinhua news agency reported in 2010 that Chonqing had a population of 32.8 million inhabitants. 23.3 million of those people were farmers. 8.4 million farmers were migrant workers.

Chongqing is currently the 3rd largest centre for motor vehicle production in China. It is the largest producer of motorcycles in the country. Iron, steel and agriculture are also important to the local economy.

Chongqing has many historical sites, including World War II buildings. Other attractions include Wuxi Country, the Dazu Rock Carvings, the Three Natiral Bridges and Fishing Town.
