Dalai Lama

The traditional ruler of Tibet. The present Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born in 1935 and fled from Tibet after the 1950 Chinese invasion. He returned but fled a second time in 1959, taking refuge in India, when the Chinese suppressed a Tibetan rising. In 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He remains in exile.
