Deusto University

Deusto University is a Spanish Jesuit University, with campuses in Bilbao and San Sebastián (Spain). It was created in 1886 in the distric of Deusto in Bilbao (in that times Deusto was not part of Bilbao) as the Basque Country wanted to have their own university and the Society of Jesus wanted to move its School of Higher Studies to a more central place. The Central Building (also known as Literary University) was built in 1883 by the architect Francisco Cubas y González Montes and it was was declared a Historical Monument in 2002. Now is just placed opposite to the Guggenheim museum.

It was not until 1962 that an agreement was signed between the Spanish Government and the Holy See to provide Church Universities with a legal basis, but it was only for Faculties of Law and Philosophy and Arts. Since then, the number of students increased until reach at this moment 14,000 students, and the rest of the faculties were legalised too.

About the San Sebastian campus, its origin was ESSA in 1956 and in 1990 it became the second campus of the University of Deusto. Nowadays, it has the Faculties of Economic and Business Studies-ESTE, the Faculty of Humanities, the University School of Tourism and the University School of Social Work.

Currently they offer 24 graduates, 63 postgraduates and they have agreements with 13 different countries in order to send their students abroad.
