Erythraean Sea, name of unclear origin anciently applied to the Indian Ocean, later to the Arabian Gulf, and finally to the Red Sea. This name may have derived from the seasonal blooms of the red-coloured Trichodesmium erythraeum near the water's surface, actually means "red".
