Francisco Goya

(1746-1828)Goya was a Spanish romantic painter. He used to be the court painter of the Spanish Crown, and through his paintings he became a chronicler of his era. He is really famous because of the delicate tonalities of his paintings and for the history that is hidden in his works.

Goya is considered the last of the Old Masters (European painters of skill who worked before about 1800) and the first of the Moderns. Although at the begining of his career he was rejected by several art institutions, he moved to Italy where he won a second prize in a painting competition organised by the City of Parma. Since that moment he began to work as a painter.

About his paintings, it's worth to comment "The Third of May 1808" which represent the French invasion to Spain by Joseph Bonaparte (Napoleon's brother), and the "The Nude Maja", which is considered the first explicit depiction of female pubic hair in Western painting (although he also painted "The Clothed Maja", which is the same painting but the woman has clothes on).
