Free-Soil party
A political party active between 1848 and 1854. Its members were adamantly opposed to slavery being spread through the Western Territories and the land gained in the war with Mexico. Their slogan was "Free soil, free speech, free labor, and free men." This party was the precursor of the Republican party formed in 1854.
