The French Fifth Republic is the fifth and current republican government of France, which started on 4 October 1958. France has had six main presidents during this period, including two interim rules by Alain Poher, when Charles de Gaulle resigned, and Georges Pompidou died in office. There have been 19 Prime Ministers in the period and elections on 22 April 2012 will decide the next president of France.
