George Lindsey, famed actor and star of the Andy Griffith show and known for his portrayal of Goober Pyle, died on May 6, 2012. He was 83.

George Lindsey was widely recognised in his role as Goober Pyle, the humble gas station attendant, and played the character on three consecutive television shows, "The Andy Griffith Show", "Mayberry R.F.D." and "Hee Haw". He starred on television from the early 1960s until the early 1990s, and was also featured in numerous films, broadway musicals and was the voice actor for several Disney cartoon films. He was at the forefront of American television during its formative years. He died of old age after suffering from a brief illness.
