Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP)

Aprotein, originally discovered in a light-emitting jellyfish, that generates green fluorescent light. GFP is widely used as a genetic tag in fluorescence microscopy. It allows observation of specific neurons and some of their components over time in living cells, or even in whole organisms. Especially exciting has been the ability to monitor changes neuronal structure over time.
