Hermes was the herdsman of the dead, who takes souls to the underworld. This is just one of his key godly occupations; he was also a thief, a messenger, and a commerce God. Even as an infant Hermes showed remarkable prowess. Escaping his cradle and wandering outside, he walked from mount Cyllene to Pieria where he found Apollo's cattle.
