Ice Ages
The cold phases of the Pleistocene epoch, a period of extreme oscillation in global temperatures with corresponding extensions and contractions of the polar ice sheets. The long-accepted sequence of four glacial/ interglacial phases from 750,000 ya - recognised in the northern hemisphere - is now known to be too simplistic. Recent studies of polar ice cores and ocean sediments have identified at least 22 major warm and cold phases occurring within the same period.
