Jim Yong Kim

Jim Yong Kim (born December 8, 1959) is a Korean-American physician by trade and a prominent figure in global health and development circles. He was formerly the Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and was a co-founder and executive director of Partners in Health. Kim was also a former leader of the World Health Organization's initiatives to combat HIV/AIDS. On March 2, 2009, Kim was named the 17th President of Dartmouth College, a position he formally assumed on July 1, 2009. Kim is the first Asian-American to assume the post of president at an Ivy League institution.

On March 23, 2012, President Obama announced that the United States would nominate Kim as the next President of the World Bank. Since its founding in 1944, the World Bank always has been headed by an American. Developing countries have long sought to gain more power in the World Bank as well as its sister lending organization, the International Monetary Fund, which always has been headed by a European.

Jim Yong Kim was named by President Obama as the next President of the World Bank on March 23, 2012.
