Knossos

One of the oldest inhabited sites in Crete and, from 2000 BC, the site of the most impressive and sophisticated palace complex of the Minoan civilization. It was even designed to withstand earthquakes. At its height in about 1600 BC, the palace and its rulers probably controlled most of the island. It was also a centre for sophisticated religious rituals, including bull-leaping. The palace appears to have been taken over by the Mycenaeans (c.1450 BC) and probably collapsed with their civilization in about 1200 BC.
