Lin Huiyin

Lin Huiyin (Chinese: 林徽因) (10 June 1904 – 1 April 1955) was a well-known 20th century Chinese writer and poet. She is also widely considered to be China's first female architect.

She came from a wealthy family and studied both in the United States and in England where she met and is said to have had an affair with the prominent romantic Chinese poet Xuzhimo.

When she finally returned to China she was instrumental in the establishment of the Architectural Department in Northeastern University in Shenyang where she taught architecture for a brief period. In 1929 she also designed a railway station in Jilin province.

From the 1930s onwards she and her husband Liang Qichao lived in Beijing. There they carried out research for the book they co-authored called The History of Chinese Architecture. After 1949 the pair were involved in the design of the National Emblem of the People's Republic of China, as well as the Monument to the People's Heroes in Tiananmen Square.
