Inca city, situated high above the Urabamba valley, Peru. It was probably a border outpost or religious center. The city was unknown to the Spanish conquistadors and lay undiscovered until 1911. Built in typical Inca style with massive dry-stone masonry, Macchu Picchu remains in a remarkable state of preservation.
