Minnesota, with nickname "The North Star State," and also known as "The Gopher State" or "The Land of 10,000 Lakes" is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern United States. The twelfth largest state of the U.S., it is the twenty-first most populous, with 5.3 million residents. The state shares a Lake Superior water border with Michigan and Wisconsin on the northeast; the remainder of the eastern border is with Wisconsin. Iowa is to the south, North Dakota and South Dakota to the west, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba to the north. It entered the Union on May 11, 1858. St. Paul is the state capital. Other major cities include Minneapolis, Rochester, Duluth, Bloomington, Plymouth, Brooklyn Park, St. Cloud, Eagan, and Coon Rapids.
