Panopticon
A specific design of a prison which enables guards to view all prisoners at any one time, without any of the prisoners knowing they are being watched. This is achieved with a circular design featuring a guard's outpost in the center and limited viewing angles from within each cell. It was designed in 18th century England by noted criminologist Jeremy Bentham.
Modern prisons use a similar approach to the original design, and the principles have been incorporated into any structure that requires staff to monitor inhabitants, such as hospitals and schools.
