Pompey

Also known as Pompey the Great (Latin name: Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus), was a political and military leader in ancient Rome and contemporary and antagonist of Julius Caesar.

Rising to glory in the Sulla's second civil war, helping the later to defeat the Marians, as well as eventually winning the Sertorian War and finished Spartacus' slave revolt.

Afterwards he was ordered to command a naval task force to deal with piracy in the Mediterranean Sea. Finishing this task guaranteed Pompey his next and even more impressive command, this time in Rome's long-running war against Mithridates, whom he defeated several times.

Returning to Rome he formed together with Caesar and Crassus

the First Triumvirate. But with Crassus' and Julias' ,daughter of Caesar and wife of Pompey, death , the triumvirate shattered, leaving the former allies soon to be enemies.

When Caesar crossed the Rubikon, a civil war was inevitable. After intense fighting, Pompey was significantly beaten in the Battle of Pharsalus.

Pompeius fled to Egypt, where mpey's fate was decided by the counsellors of the young king Ptolemy XIII. While Pompey waited offshore, they argued the cost of offering him refuge with Caesar already en route to Egypt; the king's eunuch Pothinus won out.Pompey was stabbed to death by his betrayers.
