Solon

Athenian politician who in 594-593 BC was assigned the task of asserting city authority over the powerful aristocratic families of Attica. His stated aim was to bring 'go ¯od order'. He curbed privilege based solely on birth and introduced a comprehensive code of law to which all citizens were equally subject. His reforms were threatened by the tyrant Peisistratus, but survived to be extended by Kleisthenes.
