A great soil group of the intrazonal order and halomorphic suborder, consisting of soils with a very thin, friable, surface soil underlain by a dark, hard columnar layer usually highly alkaline; formed under subhumid to arid, hot to cool climates, under better drainage than Solonchaks, and under a native vegetation of halophytic plants.
