Superoxide dismutase
Enzymes that catalyse the dismutation of superoxide to hydrogen peroxide through the use of a redox active metal cofactor such as a copper or a manganese. In mammals there is a cytosolic isoform (SOD1 or Cu,Zn-SOD), a mitochondrial isoform, MnSOD (Manganese SOD) SOD2 and an extracellular form (SOD-3) which is also a Cu,Zn-SOD enzyme.
