The Deer Hunter is a 1978 drama film that won 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture, along with 4 other nominations. Starring Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken and Meryl Streep, it tells the storey of a trio of Rusyn Americans and their involvement with the Vietnam war.

It ran over-budget due to repeated delays and eventually cost around 15 million USD, but returned almost 50 million at the US box office.

It was controversial at release for its portrayal of the Vietnamese during the war as well as the Russian roulette scene that still gets referenced in popular culture, despite no accounts of Russian roulette actually occurring in the real war.
