Athenian politician, diplomat and general. He was instrumental in building the Piraeus, the harbour in Athens, constructing a new navy from the city's silver resources, and masterminding the victory at Salamis. His later career was less fortunate. He was exiled from Athens and entered the service of the Persians before he died.
