The United Kingdom parliamentary expenses scandal was a major political scandal that took place in 2009. In May 2009, the Telegraph newspaper obtained a full list of the expenses claimed by British MPs and subsequently started printing expenses abuses claimed by MPs such as tax evasion, claiming for second homes, and exploiting the 'no receipt' rule, whereby MPs are not required to produce receipts for claims below £250. The scandal led to the resignation of many prominent figures including the Speaker of the House of Commons and several Cabinet members.
