Y-joint

A DNA heteroduplex structure in which one strand is extended by a non-homologous internal sequence. The loop of the longer strand is base-paired with itself in a hairpin structure. In an open Y-joint the shorter, continuous strand is nicked at the joint; in a closed Y-joint the continuous strand is un-nicked.
