Bowlers, good bowlers at least, will put spin on the bowling ball and so when the ball hits the pins, the movement or motion of the pins will be directed by the spin. So by putting spin on the ball a bowler can, as an example, cause the pins to move across the lane horizontally and thus have a good chance of knocking down many pins.
