Alpine accentor
The alpine accentor, Prunella collaris, resembles a lark both in size and in its song. Its chin and throat are whitish spotted black, the flanks are streaked with russet, the breast is greyish. The nest is placed above the tree line on rock-strewn mountain slopes, in crevices of rocks, or beneath flat boulders. Always well concealed, it is made of dry grass, leaves and moss and lined with hair and feathers. The male frequently makes a brief courtship flight as he sings. Accentors are not shy and will let an observer come quite close to them. They inhabit the highest mountains from the Atlas in north-west Africa through south and central Europe and Asia to Japan. The dunnock is resident in the British Isles, but migratory elsewhere in its range; the alpine accentor only makes local movements.
