Anomie is a social condition in which there is a lack of cohesion and order, especially in relation to norms and values. If norms are defined ambiguously or are enforced in a haphazard or arbitrary way or if a disaster such as war disrupts the usual pattern of social life and creates a situation in which it is unclear just what norms apply, then anomie or "normlessness" can result.
