Aortic insufficiency refers specifically to the aortic valve, that valve, the blood passes through, as it leaves the heart and aorta. When blood leaks backwards through the valve is known as aortic insufficiency. Small quantities of aortic insufficiency may be irrelevant, but larger amounts require repair or replacement of the aortic valve.
