The swimmer starts in the water, they are holding on to the backstroke starting grips and have their feet, that must be completely underwater, against the wall of the pool. When the starting signal goes off the swimmers push off the wall with their feet and simultaneously lets go of the starting grips and start to swim with their backs in the water.
