Binnacle clock

From about 1812 a marine clock had what is now known as 'ship's bell' striking. The minute hand made a revolution every half hour and the hour had every eight hours; a suitable but unconventional dial was provided. It was probably so called because it was supposed it might well be located near the binnacle on a ship.
