Brakeman's cabin

Brakemen's cabins were located at either end of the waggon and were used by the brakemen in charge of braking the trains. As air brakes along the train (automatic continuous brake) had yet to be invented at the time, the brakemen listened out for the driver's orders, given by blows of the whistle. Brakeman's cabins were gradually phased out, with the last ones disappearing in the 1960s.
