1) The result when one response* alters some of the variables which control another response. For example, the first number a student writes in solving a long division problem becomes part of the stimuli that control the next number he or she writes. Each number written alters the stimuli to which the student responds. The result is called chaining.

2) A procedure in which intact responses are reinforced in sequence to form more complex behaviours that ultimately occur as a single cohesive performance. See also Backward chaining procedure and Forward chaining.

3) The reinforcement of successive elements of a behaviour chain.

4) The generalised reinforcer is a type of conditioned reinforcer which has the additional property that its effectiveness does not depend upon a single kind of deprivation. It is the occasion on which many different performances may be reinforced by different- kinds of reinforcers. Money is a generalised reinforcer.
