Chitinase

An enzyme that degrades (breaks down) chitin. It is one of the pathogenesisrelated proteins produced by certain plants as a disease-fighting response to entry-intoplant of pathogenic (disease-causing) fungi. Chitinase is also sometimes produced by certain fungi and actinomycetes that destroy the eggs (i.e., chitin-containing shells) of harmful roundworms.
