Colonialism
The acquisition of foreign territory for settlement and exploitation. Following Spanish and Portuguese conquests in South America in the 15th and 16th centuries, most major European powers subsequently claimed extra-European territory, culminating in the 'scramble for Africa' in the late 19th century. The British empire was the largest in the world until after World War II.
