Cosmic horror

A subgenre of science fiction horror in which the world around the protagonist is filled with indifferent and overwhelming evil. A major element of cosmic horror is that any investigation into the true nature of the world dooms the protagonist. The ultimate antagonist in the storey is godlike and indifferent in its destruction, though there may be intermediaries such as a cult, servant or avatar of the main antagonist. Cosmic horror is most frequently connected with the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
