Cottage bread

English loaf that traditionally used plain flour, though today whole wheat flour is also used; this loaf actually consists of two round loaves stacked on top of one another, the top loaf significantly smaller than the bottom one. To prevent the two loaves from separating during the baking process, a hole is created using a kitchen dowel from the top, through the centre of each, to the bottom, to push some of the upper loaf into the bottom loaf as a means of melding them together.
