Cut-off cylinder

A device consisting essentially of a short, rigid bar so made and so mounted that it forms a direct connexion between the apparatus being tested and a permanent monument on the ground. Its length and inclination provide the means for determining the relative locations of the fiducial marks on the base tape or bar and on the monument. It is used to refer the mark at the end of a surveyor's tape or bar standard to a mark on the ground.
