Eccentric contraction

A contraction where the muscle lengthens, such as when you lower a weight in your hand but resist the lowering. A dynamic action because of joint movement. This kind of contraction -- for example in your quadricep muscle when you run downhill -- tends to cause the most post-exercise muscle soreness.
