Field capacity (FC)

Maximum amount of water that a soil can hold for a certain period against gravity drainage. Put another way it is the amount of water left in the soil after all the free water has had a chance to drain out through the force of gravity. The water content is expressed as the ratio of the volume of water, at field capacity, to the volume of soil sampled.
