Fluorescence lifetime

The average time that a population of fluorophores spends in the excited state before collapse to the ground state. The lifetime is equal to the reciprocal of the first-order rate constant for the decay of fluorescence; this constant is increased, and the lifetime decreased, by non-radiative interaction of the excited state with its environment.
