An abbreviation of forecastle. Refers to that portion of the cabin which is farthest forward. In square-riggers often used as quarters for the crew. In the early days of sail a castle like structure was built on the fore and aft ends of the hull and used as fighting platforms with the midships area reserved for rigging and sails.
