Gotthard base tunnel

Currently the world's longest at 35.4-mile (57-kilometer), the Gotthard Base Tunnel through the Swiss Alps was first conceived in 1947 by engineer Eduard Gruner. The project lasted for more than a decade at a cost of $5.7 billion. It beats Japan's Seikan Tunnel in length, which is the previous record holder at 33.5 miles (53.9 kilometers).
