Haemanthus

Genus of 21 species of bulbous perennials, some of them evergreen, from grassy, rocky hillsides in South Africa. A stout stalk bears the giant flower-head above the few large leaves at the base. The bulb is planted with the tip above the compost. Haemanthus katharinae is the most popular evergreen. The red flowers appear in summer - offsets are not produced. The flower-head of H. albiflos is white and much smaller - offsets are formed.
