Hedge sparrow
A member in the family of accentors (Prunellidae), dunnock or hedge sparrow, Prunella modularis, which, though common above the tree line, also inhabits scrub and undergrowth at lower altitudes. Here, in spring, the male warbles his rapid song with its sharp, metallic notes, perched on the top of a bush or hedgerow. The head and neck are slaty-grey, the upper parts dark brown, the underparts slaty-grey, both with dark streaks. The female builds the nest in thick cover, of twigs and moss with a soft lining. The clutch is of 3-5 eggs and there are usually two brooks in the year, beginning in mid-April. The hedge sparrow is a European species, occasionally found in western Asia. In Britain it has become a typical garden bird.
