Helical antenna

An antenna in the form of an open ended, loosely coiled helix; the distance around one turn is approximately equal to the wavelength for which the antenna was designed. It has appreciable gain in the direction of its axis. Because of its high gain and small size (at the wavelength for which it was designed), it has been much used for receiving long wavelength signals such as those of the TRANSIT satellites.
