Hot box

The bearings for cars are contained within axle-boxes. In abnormal circumstances, particularly with plain bearing axle-boxes, the box could overheat, causing the axle or bearings to break with a possible risk of derailment. A hot box may be highly conspicuous due to the red glow emanating from the box casing and the axle pin. When a vehicle is discovered to have an overheated axle-box (by observation or HABD detectors) without any break in the axle spindle, recommendations are to detach the vehicle at a nominated siding (restricted speed).
