Hydroelectric rent is the amount of money paid by a hydro power plant or the company that runs it to the local community in the area the plant is operating in as compensation for its impact on the environment and people's lives. Hydro power plants and their accumulation lakes cause ground water levels to drop, forests and vegetation to dry out, fields to flood, and the number of mosquitoes in the area to increase drastically, among other things.
